$10,000 granted to CJSC for the renovations of the Student Room

The Hon Dave Kelly committed $10,000 to Cyril Jackson Senior Campus’ Student Room project. The Student Room is a much needed space for the cohort at CJSC and it only seemed fitting that if the space is for the students, it is designed by them. Lead by student Rosie Crammond the Student Advisory Group project managed the extensive renovations.

Midlas also generously donated an amazing print by indigenous artist Wilo, which is hung for all to enjoy in the Student Room.

The Hon Dave Kelly, Member for Bassendean officially opened the room and spoke enthusiastically with all students and congratulated them on the impressive work they put into the renovations.

Well done team, what an amazing effort by all!

Two CJ Students Win Zonta Study Grant

Two of our Year 11 students, Farzanna Rafee & Penny Niang Mang Pum attended the Swan Hills Zonta Awards Dinner on the 20 October and both won the $600 Study Awards Grant.  Eight year 11 female students were shortlisted for an interview and these two shone through.

Zonta International is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.

These young women certainly deserve their grants, and what an inspiration to other migrant students.

Well done Farzanna and Penny!

Festive Cake Creations by CJ Hospitality Students

This year’s hospitality student’s have produced some spectacular festive cakes over the last two weeks!

The students designed and created their own festive masterpieces, learning new skills along the way. They baked their own cakes and learnt the art of working with rolled icing, after some design work, they made their own decorations and assembled them.

Their teacher Cath MacDougall said “What I noticed most when taking pictures of the students with their cakes was the pride they felt. What incredibly, beautiful works of art!”

Well done hospitality students.

Plant Ark Seedling Bank and National Tree Day

The Community Services endorsed course applied for and received a grant of $500 through the Planet Ark Seedling Bank. Our project was to plant a native bird-attracting garden at CJ, to provide a safe habitat and food source for native birds like pink & grey galahs and to showcase our beautiful native, water-wise plants for students and teachers to enjoy.

We completed the planting last week and we welcomed IEC students and teachers the next day with home-made orange cake and a tour.  It was a really wonderful experience for everyone involved from learning about:

                  • the grant application process
                  • what National Tree Day is and Planet Ark
                  • benefits of trees to people & the planet
                  • benefits of water-wise natives
                  • selecting natives
                  • how to attract birds into a garden
                  • types of native birds
                  • measuring and designing a garden
                  • how to plant native seedlings

Special thanks to Craig, our gardener for his expertise and Belinda for her support with the project.

Western Australian Youth Parliament

This year, two Cyril Jackson students, Jean Paul Niyonzima (Year 11) and Akuol Abut Deng (Year 12) participated in the 26th annual YMCA Western Australian Youth Parliament program. Youth Parliament is a program for young West Australians aged between 15-25 who are engaged in their community and want their voice to be heard.  The program involves a range of activities including a week long residential camp which Jean Paul and Akuol attended during the July school holidays.

The program offers participants a chance to meet other like-minded young people, build leadership skills, develop public speaking skills and confidence, gain an understanding of issues affecting the community, and network with current members of parliament. Both Jean Paul and Akuol had a wonderful time in the program, and learned so much about themselves, how parliament and government works, the issues faced by people in their communities, and how to address some of these issues to make their community a better place in the future.

They are very grateful to the YMCA for selecting them for the program, and also to the Honourable Minister John Quigley MLA and Ms Jessica Shaw MLA for sponsoring their participation in this program.

Congratulations Jean Paul and Akuol!

The Green Trail Project

Working together with our CJCS ArtsHouse, the Town of Bassendean invited artists to apply to be involved in creating artworks for a Green Trail project, to deliver an engaging experience along the pathway in Bassendean.

This trail has been created, with funding from the Department of Transport.  It is a series of plantings along the shared cycling and walking pathway between Ashfield train station to Bassendean train station to Success Hill train station to Kelly Park.

The project is led by local artist and creative coder Steve Berrick, together with Cyril Jackson Senior Campus Visual Arts teacher and ArtsHouse Coordinator Marie Molloy. We are delighted that the CJSC Arts and Design students have been successful in their application to participate.

Local history and archival images and stories will be the starting point for the project, utilising stories in the local studies collection and rail history museum.  The artist will create moments of engagement for the trail, as well as work with the Cyril Jackson Arts and Design students to provide professional support as they create works in response to the themes identified.

Congratulations to CJ Art students, Jessica, Jessica, Kim, PJ, Ros and Skylar, we can’t wait to see your creations.

Feast for Freedom

The Community Services class prepared a delicious dish called Kabuli Palaw (rice with chicken, carrots, nuts and sultanas) with our Ethnic Education Assistant Roya’s special Afghan family recipe.
This fund-raising project involved marketing, selling tickets, preparing and packaging take-away meals and raised a total of $215 to help asylum seekers through the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
Special thanks to Roya and everyone else who supported us.

Working together for the community.

On Wednesday the 17th March, our Hospitality and the Community Services students worked together to cater the International Women’s Day Morning Tea for the community members of the Town of Bassendean.
“Our Community Services students had the wonderful opportunity to network with the local community though volunteering and to work alongside Chef Neal Jackson to plate up and serve the delicious morning tea treats prepared by Cath’s students, they did a fantastic job.” Catherine Moore CJSC Teacher.
“Our hospitality students worked with 5000Meals Chef Tanya to prepare the arrangement of food, providing the industry expertise and working to industry standards, I am very proud of their efforts.” Cath MacDougall CJSC Teacher.
