Doctor, Medical Scientist & Community Worker

Bruce Robinson commenced at Cyril Jackson High School in 1963, the first year the school operated on the current site and following completion of Year 10 in 1965 he transitioned to Governor Stirling SHS to complete senior school. Following matriculation he studied medicine at the University of Western Australia.

Bruce has spent his career as a lung specialist and teaching future doctors in medical research. His work in mesothelioma (asbestos lung disease) has been lauded internationally and he was the first Australian recipient of the Wagner Medal, awarded by the peak international body for asbestos cancer. He has also been a recipient of the Selikoff Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation. Bruce has been recognised nationally and within Western Australia for his work as a medical researcher.

As a teacher he has developed the skills of trainee doctors in among other facets, bedside manner, breaking bad news to cancer patients and work-life balance. For many years he has run the acclaimed pre-intern camp preparing medical students for the rigours of their intern year. He has won three UWA Teacher-of-the-Year awards.

Bruce established the Fathering Project to provide guidance in the raising and nurturing of children by men. He has also written three best-selling books about fathering. This project has drawn wide acclaim from a number of organisations and fathers. For his broad community work and the excellent outcomes he has delivered in his role as Professor of Medicine at UWA, he was named the 2013 Western Australian of the Year. Professor Robinson has also been recognised as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

His spirit of volunteerism has been exemplared in his work as a volunteer community doctor in developing countries facing natural disasters, such as in Aceh in 2004.

Bruce was also a noted sportsman and footballer. He continues to play a role in supporting community sport.

Professor Bruce Robinson is grateful for the opportunities given to him in his early secondary studies at Cyril Jackson SHS and from there built a formidable career as a clinician, teacher and medical scientist. He is recognised internationally, nationally and locally for his work and is today named as a Champion of CJ.
