Human Relations and Information Technology Manager

Bevan Doyle’s journey at Cyril Jackson SHS began in 1966, a year of significant change in Australia with the transition from pounds to dollars. Growing up in Ashfield and attending Ashfield Primary School, CJ was always nearby. His childhood also included an 18-month stint in South Australia near the Nullarbor Plain, adding a unique chapter to his early years.

At CJ, while academics didn’t captivate him, Bevan thrived in the social environment. The camaraderie and social gatherings were the highlights of his school life, leaving him with cherished memories as he completed his Leaving Certificate in 1970.

Bevan’s professional life began in December 1970 when he joined the Public Service at the Mines Department. This role laid the foundation for a rewarding career. In 1974, he moved to the Medical Department, and by 1976, Bevan was back at the Mines Department in the Human Resources (HR) office, marking the start of his HR journey.

His career progressed steadily. By 1980, he was at the Public Service Commission, recruiting new employees and eventually became Manager of Personnel, a role that significantly impacted the Public Service. This experience led to his next major role in 1984 at the Establishment branch of the Public Service Board, where he handled classifications and annual reviews.

A brief detour into Industrial Relations had him handling various issues, including appearances at the Industrial Relations Commission. However, a major shift occurred in 1985 when the government overhauled the Public Service’s policy and organisational structures. With his background, he was appointed as one of four officers to lead this transformative task.

In 1988, seeking a new challenge, he joined the Department of Education as head of the Personnel Operations Unit, managing job classifications and personnel in non-teaching areas. During this time, he developed a passion for technology and its potential to enhance business processes, leading to a role as Director of Personnel 2000, overseeing a project to modernise the Department’s Personnel and Payroll System. Successfully managing a payroll for over 70,000 employees was one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.

Following this, he was offered various roles, but a chance encounter led to his appointment as Manager of Technology and Infrastructure. This role marked the beginning of an intense learning experience in the world of high-level technology. After two years, he became Director of Operations in IT and eventually the Executive Director and Chief Information Officer. In this role, Bevan oversaw more than 300 employees and managed a budget exceeding $100 million.

Bevan spent 12 years in that role, loving every minute of it. During his tenure, the Department of Education’s IT area received numerous national and international awards for its innovative technology in education delivery. He worked with an amazing team, retiring in 2016. Bevan reflects on his career with pride and gratitude for the journey that began at CJ. For his impactful and successful professional life in HR and IT, Bevan Doyle is today named a Champion of CJ.
