MORE than 100 students from Cyril Jackson Senior Campus were rewarded with certificates after completing free swimming lessons at Bayswater Waves this month.
Ten lessons are offered to students by the Education Department each semester.
Deputy Principal, Belinda Stewart said 116 students took part in the program after staff relayed concerns about the high number of drownings among newly arrived Australians.
“Absolute beginners who have never swum before can all now swim a short distance and all students have learnt water safety techniques such as treading water and floating,” she said.
Student Yazan Badr Aldin said he learnt new strokes as he was taught only freestyle in his country: “It made me more interested in getting my higher level in achieving lifesaving certificate,” he said. “It was clean and well organised… I also learnt lifesaving and first aid skills.”
Fellow student Mohammad Alialian said students had fun swimming in the waves pool on the last day. “I learnt frog kick; also I learnt how to dive and swim long distance in faster time,” he said.
