In SITU dance platform staged their 2019 performance season in the corridors and hidden nooks of CJSC and ArtsHouse.
In SITU is an annual season of original dance works crafted by independent WA choreographers and composers responding directly to the site of the performance venue, and presented to intimate audiences in a roaming promenade style.
In SITU is a unique, inspired arts platform. It champions collaboration, ingenuity and community engagement, and it aligns with the vision we have for our students. We are thrilled that the curatorial team selected our school site for its unique character and history.
The benefits were mutual: the In SITU choreographic platform was enriched, challenged and expanded by operating in a live, constantly activated venue, and reciprocally, our students and extended community were invigorated and enlightened by the on-going artistic and professional exchange on site.
Curated by Serena Chalker and Geordie Crawley, in association with industry partners STRUT Dance and TURA New Music, the 2019 season presented four new creative works by collaborative artist duos:
- Scott Gailbraith, working with composer Alex Turner
- Joshua Pether, working with composer Rebecca Riggs-Bennett
- Yvan Karlsson, working with composer Tao Isarro Mot
- Michelle Aitken, working with composer Dane Yates
These selected choreographers and composers worked collaboratively to draw inspiration from the particular spaces and dynamic community of CJSC, and delved into the archives of our local history and collective memories of the school.
Artists worked on-site for the Spring Festival on September 25th, at a lunchtime Q&A session with students, and extensively throughout the rehearsal period. CJSC students were also provided with an opportunity to gain invaluable hands-on industry experience in both Front of House and backstage capacities for rehearsals and performance nights. In Situ was presented on campus in two performances each evening of November 7, 8 and 9, 2019.
